Dr. Velmalia "Dr. Vel™" Matthews-Smith, MD, is a woman of faith with a huge heart to bring health and healing to the world. In 2024, she formalized a long-term partnership with Suddenly Joyful by instituting this fund to create medical, ministry, missions and educational charitable resources.
Dr. Velmalia "Dr. Vel" Matthews-Smith, MD, is a dual board certified Oncologist and serves as the Medical Director for the Center for Cancer Care at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Dr. Vel is a woman of faith with a huge heart to bring health and healing to the world.
Dr. Vel completed fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, where she was named Most Outstanding Clinician, and was the recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. She performed research on non-small cell lung cancers in African-Americans, a study funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
She is a member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She has served as an Assistant Professor at Wake Forest Baptist Health, written a number of publications, given presentations, and conducted research.
Dr. Vel specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using chemotherapy, and medically based interventions. Her practice focuses on medical oncology, including treatment of cancers common to the North Country, such as cancer of the lung, colon, and breast.

Paul Howard Bell Scholarship Fund supports a student or students pursuing ministerial studies. Paul Howard Bell planted churches, served as a pastor, and provided leadership to distressed ministries throughout northeast Mississippi for over fifty years. He was a visionary, and passionately supported initiatives focused on children and young adults.

Thelma McClenton is a mother of three who completed a BSN in 1982 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 1997 at Mississippi University for Women. She worked at Northeast Mississippi Medical Center for over one decade; founded Golden Triangle Rural Health Clinic (Starkville, MS); and was a lead clinician at Aberdeen Health Clinic for almost two decades. Passionate about preventative health, she became certified in Lifestyle Medicine to continue providing quality service to her family and community in Northeast Mississippi.
